A quick run-down of my first seven years in vidding:

Year 1: How do I cut?

Year 2: OMG SO FUN

Year 3: Some people actually like my stuff?

Year 4: Huge community is infinite

Year 5: Huh, I never thought about any of that. Or that. Or that. This changes everything.

Year 6: SO MUCH TO REMEMBER.

Year 7: How do I cut?

For this reason I think 2013 will be fantastic. Behold my flawless logic.

Speaking of fantastic, the dates and details for Vividcon 2013 were announced last week and vidders are currently claiming dance songs to use for Club Vivid, aka the Greatest Night of the Year.

I'm sure people will be talking about panel and vidshow topics soon, and one thing that I'd love to see this year is a discussion about vidding awards sites - mainly about whether they can still be relevant and valuable to vidders.

Back when I got into vidding in ye olden tymes of 2006, there was a huge number of awards sites, each with its own personality and style. While I've always believed that it's important to keep the actual results in perspective, they gave me a sense of how others saw my work, showed me what others were doing, and helped me connect to the community at a time when I desperately needed all of that.

Over the years, almost all of those sites have faded away. Certainly there are still some really good ones around that I know, including Driver Picks the Music and (I'm assuming) many many more of which I am horribly ignorant. But there seems to be a clear dropoff in enthusiasm and participation among vidding awards sites in the past few years. It looks as though The Art of Vidding Awards could be going on hiatus, there's no Fourth Wall this year, and many other such sites are simply no more.

I wonder if there's a way that awards sites could be formatted or structured differently; something that would generate more buzz and bring huge numbers of vidders together again to share their work. And also be easy to maintain over time. I know, this is me wanting everything. Still, it's definitely something I'd enjoy discussing.

In the meantime I've been clipping the Mass Effect series for what I hope will be a VidUKon vid. (Spoiler: It's a lot of footage. Thank goodness for beccatoria.) Milly's already working on her Club Vivid vid, which has the potential to be total cracky perfection and an absolute classic. No pressure, Milly.

I don't believe I've ever submitted a vid to an award site, no. I was Very Much Against competitive approaches to fandom back then. I don't know how I feel about it now as a general thing, I just know that it's not for me.

This is why I want to hear! It's a totally alien culture to me.

Too much thinking can definitely be creatively constipating. I'm glad you've let some of that stuff go.
